Blog #4

My topic will be on conservation in South Carolina. With all the unique environments we have here, we have to protect them because with unique environments comes very specialized plant and animal species. Species which cannot survive in any location other than the one they are native to. And if these locations, these environments, are destroyed then these animals and plants will be lost forever. And as conservation minded human beings we simply cannot allow that to happen. The research question I plan to pursue at this point will be "what is the most common factor that has put SC species on the endangered list?" I'm really interested in this because I've always been super into animals, specifically reptiles and amphibians who now comprise the majority of the endangered list for animals in SC. So basically I want to see what I can do to help protect them and keep them from going extinct. In order to research this topic, I intend to do individual research inquiries on each individual species on the endangered list of SC and find out exactly what it is that threatens their existence.

Proposed schedule
Research               March 23-25
Writing                 March 26-29
Turn it in              March 30

I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing for project three but I do know I have a pretty serious advantage. My brother graduated from Clemson last year with the same major as what I'm currently taking. So when it comes down to researching I'm probably going to call him up and talk to him about some of what he does. I hope that helps me out at least a bit. Being a Wildlife and Fisheries Bio student, I really don't have a lot of writing in my major, so I'm really not entirely sure what I'll be doing in the future. HA I don't really know what I'm doing with my future at all to be honest. Oh the sad truth.

Assignment 1 wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. I struggled for a long time over the prompt trying to figure out exactly what was expected of me. And then once I figured out what I needed to write about, the words didn't want to come to me. Once I had written my shitty first draft I lost almost all motivation I had to begin with so I don't feel too thrilled with my result. Hopefully the future will be better for my writing.

First Blog Entry

Hey y'all, my name is Mathew Harriz and I'm a Wildlife and Fisheries Biology major. I have lived in Simpsonville South Carolina, in the same house, my whole life. I've been in Boy Scouts since I was around 5 until I turned 18 (I did earn my Eagle) and I still spend summers working at Camp Old Indian. I have an unfortunate coffee addiction that college has only made worse and cant go a day without either a cup-o-joe or a headache. I love music with a passion, and am almost listening to something, be it indie, metal, country, or new age, I enjoy it. I am also an artist and take commissions for tattoo designs (anyone interested, lemme know and I'll be happy to show off some previous work) as well as your usual doodles. When I'm sad I like to write poetry, and some of its not half bad, but the majority of it is just personal ranting about life. When its not freezing or raining outside I like to longboard around campus. I haven't been boarding long, but in that time I've only had one hard fall from which I'm still recovering.
The first week of class was interesting. Getting to know people and professors as well as their expectations has been pretty simple. Something from English 1030 to reflect on was the major theme of everyone being an author. Which is accurate. Anyone has the potential to be an author with today's swath of social media's as well as simpler conventional methods of writing. Like I said above, even I am an author when I write poetry. All that's required is a bit of creative thinking and time to get the job done. Especially since noone has to proof read anything before it can be published anymore. It just sort of springs into being at the push of a button.
